Day
1 -Toronto Welcomes You
Today
you’ll arrive at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport where
transfer service is readily available to our downtown hotel. At our hotel
you’ll experience the ultimate convenience of unpacking and settling
in for the remainder of the tour. No moving later to additional accommodations!
Our full-service hotel offers all the amenities, including several restaurants,
two swimming pools, and an unbeatable location…right in the midst
of Toronto’s favorite shopping area, with dozens of eateries and
cafes nearby. A short walk from the hotel is the famous Eaton Centre,
a glass-domed galleria with glorious views of the city and over 300 shops
and restaurants.
Day
2 - Toronto-Bistros to Broadway
Like layers
on a patchwork quilt, the color and texture of today’s Toronto has
been pieced together over time by the cultures of its immigrants from
around the world. Our morning begins as we explore Toronto’s picturesque
streetscapes and broad avenues to discover a treasure-trove of ethnic
neighborhoods, diverse architecture, and fabled history. We’ll experience
an up-close-and-personal view of Toronto’s majestic skyline, a glittering
tapestry of old and new where gold–leafed skyscrapers reflect the
sun and Gothic spires reach toward the sky. We’ll see turn-of-the-century
buildings where Jenny Lind performed and P.T. Barnum first presented Tom
Thumb. Our exploration will take us along Little Italy’s winding
streets dotted with canopied bistros, and onward to grand boulevards with
their stately Victorian mansions. We’ll see all that makes Toronto
one of the most culturally exciting cities in the world.
Later,
get ready for a Smash-Hit Show, direct from Broadway!
(C. Breakfast) (Dinner)
Day
3 - Sewing Heaven
Known as the “World’s Largest Event of its
Kind,” the Creative Sewing & Needlework Festival offers you
the chance to shop from hundreds and hundreds of vendors offering fabrics,
fibers, ribbons, notions, kits, books, accessories, software, and supplies,
along with FREE “how-to” demos and “make-it-take-its”
for every imaginable needlework technique! You’ll have access to
all the latest products. And get ready to indulge your every needlework
passion including: quilting, bargello, beading Battenberg lace, blackwork,
bobbin lace, crewel, crocheting, cross stitch, embellishment, entrelac,
knitting, hardanger, heirloom sewing, intarsia, lace making, needlepoint,
pergamano, petit point, pulled work, rag and hooked rugs, ribbon craft,
serging, silk ribbon embroidery, smocking, tatting, surface embroidery—and
that’s just the beginning! You’ll also enjoy free fashion
shows, open lectures with designers, and informal discussions with artists
and TV personalities. (C. Breakfast)
Day
4 - Castles & Coverlets
High on a
hilltop overlooking Toronto stands a majestic medieval castle whose turrets seem to reach to the sky. Legend has it that a Canadian
industrialist made a fortune and then lost it building this extravaganza.
Entering the courtyard of this five-acre estate, we feel as if we’ve
been transported back in time to the Edwardian era. Once inside the massive
Great Hall with its ceilings 60 feet high, we begin our journey through
98 richly decorated rooms, secret passages, and even a tunnel 800 feet
long which connects the castle to magnificent stables. Step out to the
sweeping balcony to view the Victorian gardens below, resplendent with
ornate sculptures and gilded water fountains.
This afternoon
we journey to the pastoral countryside just outside Toronto to visit The
Hobby Horse Quilt Shop (a recent “Top-Ten” pick by Quilt Sampler
magazine). As our coach wends its way down a country lane, a
picturesque farmstead comes into view. Close by the large wooden barn
is a cozy shop with rocking chairs on the porch and a WELCOME sign above
the door, a place fondly known as “quilter’s heaven.”
Inside, wooden beams and walls are covered with quilt samples and original
Canadian patterns. Tucked here, there, and everywhere are thousands of
cotton fabrics, original patterns, books, and notions. Happy Shopping!
(C. Breakfast) (Dinner)
Day
5 - Niagara Falls
An exciting day awaits as we visit the legendary Niagara
Falls. On the Canadian side of the falls you’ll find a city touched
with European charm. Here Victorian-style courtyards and fountains are
framed by lush carpets of green and adorned with partierre gardens…a
city where horticulture is celebrated year-round.
You’ll be free this morning to enjoy the many possibilities
that await you in Niagara Falls. Perhaps you’ll visit the ornate
Greenhouse where you’ll step into a tropical wonderland of plants,
exotic free-flying songbirds and sparkling waterfalls. Or visit the topiary
garden where plants are sculpted into incredible, larger-than-life creatures.
Take a peek at the worlds largest working floral clock,
40 feet in diameter and made entirely of flowers.
For a truly memorable experience (weather permitting)
step aboard the legendary Maid of the Mist boat for the thrill of sailing
right into the basin of the falls. You can literally touch the falls and
feel the mist kissing your face as you get up close and personal to this
natural wonder…as a matter of fact you can’t get any closer
to the falls without going over them in a barrel!
Afternoon
finds us visiting the enchanting village of Niagara-on-the-Lake. You’ll
feel as if you’ve stepped back in time while strolling the quaint
streets here. Perhaps you’ll visit one of the lovely lakeside cafes
or tearooms for a bit of refreshment, or spend a leisurely afternoon shopping
at one of the charming boutiques that line the winding streets. However
you choose to spend your afternoon here, you’ll forever treasure
your Niagara Falls memories. (C. Breakfast)
Day
6 - Dining in the Clouds
The day is yours to plan as you wish. Perhaps you’ll
choose to re-visit the Creative Sewing and Needlework Festival where,
once-again, your admission has been pre-paid.
Or you might take in one of Canada’s legendary museums.
Among them is the Royal Ontario Museum, Canada’s crown-jewel, where
you’ll escape the twenty-first century as you marvel at a Chinese
tomb, or gaze into the face of an ancient mummy.
If shoes are your thing, be sure to visit the world-famous
Bata Shoe Museum whose collection contains over 10,000 varieties of foot
coverings. From an Egyptian King’s footwear to tiny Chinese lotus
shoes, from Napoleon’s socks to Marilyn Monroe’s stilettos,
you’ve never seen a collection quite like this!
At the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art you’ll find
over 2,500 pieces including pre-Columbian pottery from 3000 BC, 15th and
16th century Italian majolica, English delftware and porcelain, and early
Ming and Meissen.
This evening you’ll join us for a thrilling ride
to the top of Toronto’s fabled CN Tower for an unforgettable dinner
in the clouds.
As we linger
over our sumptuous meal, the revolving dining room offers panoramic views
of Toronto twinkling skyline. (C. Breakfast) ( Dinner)
Day
7 - Fabrics & Farewells
This morning we journey to a quiet lakeside hamlet where
imposing trees line the rolling parkland, and grand historic homes whisper
of a genteel lifestyle. Nestled in the downtown area is a cozy quilt shop
humming with inspiration for all who enter. A gallery of quilt samples
is spread throughout the shop. Many of the samples highlight exclusive
designs by Canadian artists, and many are beautifully appliqued—the
shop’s specialty. Thank goodness the staff is friendly and knowledgeable,
for this shop is filled to the brim with over two thousand different fabrics,
books, patterns, notions, quilt kits, rag quilt kits, flannels, ruching
tools, international quilting publications, shashiko supplies, and more!
And be sure to inquire about the “block of the month” club.
And if you love wool, don’t miss the shop next door.
It’s truly a knitter’s paradise. Here you’ll become
lost in an extensive collection of fine imported yarns, from baby to bulky,
from basics to fun exotics. An expert staff of knitters awaits you, as
do thousands of patterns, unusual knitting needles and accessories, buttons,
books, and gifts.
All too soon
it’s time to say farewell, as our coach departs for the airport
for departing guests, and our final stop at the hotel for guests staying
on. (C. Breakfast)
